The Tienanmen square massacre was a big riot that occurred in China in 1989. It was protesting against the problems with the Chinese pro democracy government. Lots of people gather on the anniversary of the event and other riots can occur at this time as well putting people in jail. After years of enforced silence, many young people have hardly any idea if any of what took place. Others have come to believe that the crackdown was even necessary for the sake of stability. If there had not been the military crackdown, even if some people were persecuted afterwards, at least the form of mass protest would retain some legitimacy. Another thing that happened in 1989 was a complete shift of attention. Reforms started from the countryside but the government turned its attention to the cities to keep them stable. Whenever it saw signs the city folks felt discontent it rushed to pacify them. The countryside has become the target of exploitation. Over the years the policy has led to higher average living standards, a booming economy, and a more predominant place for China in the world. It has also made enormous inequality occur, massive corruption, and growing environmental problems.

The great leap forward was Mao's idea taken under the five year plan and involved the idea of successful economic reconstruction. It ended up causing a mass of casualties by the day. It cause 30 million deaths in total. Other events such as Hitler's Holocaust or Stalin's regime, a question can occur of which event caused more deaths. It is estimated that Stalin's regime had caused 20,000,000 deaths in total (estimated). Hitler and his Holocaust regime killed about 11 million were killed, Jews made up most of this number but others such as; Gypsies, Poles, communists, homosexuals, Soviet POWs, and the mentally and physically disabled people were also executed by Hitler. So over all I'd say that the Great \leap Forward caused the most casualties.
The Chinese communist party was in Shanghai. It was originally a group of the First United Front and Nationalist party. Communists joined the national party so that they could get rid of their strong central government. After the Japanese invaded Manchuria, the Government of the Republic of China faced the triple threat of Japanese invasion, Communist uprising. Frustrated by the focus of the Nationalist leader Chiang Kai-shek on internal threats instead of the Japanese assault, a group of generals abducted Chiang in 1937 and forced him to reconsider cooperation with the Communist army. Chinese Communist leader Mao Zedong declared the creation of the People’s Republic of China. The announcement ended the civil war between the Chinese Communist Party and the Nationalist Party, broke out immediately following World War II. |
